1. The Rules: 1. Work Quietly. 2. Be Prepared. 3. Try Your Best.
It is very important to come prepared for each and every class. Materials you need to bring to every art class:
S. A small pencil sharpener P. A pencil to draw with and to write your name on your work. A. Your student agenda C. Markers and/or pencil crayons E. A white pencil eraser.
You will also need a sheet of bristol board to construct your portfolio with, and you may need a ruler and scissors and glue for certain assignments.
2. Marks: Your mark for art will will be based on an average of all your assignments, and activities. This is a promise to each of you: you will not fail if your work is completed (and handed in!) to the best of your ability. -Everyone is welcome and important in this classroom, regardless of your art skills. More info on marking will be presented before each assignment begins. Pass completed work in to Mr. Lowe ONLY. Do not hand work to another teacher or a supply teacher to pass in.
Keep your work in your portfolio unless told otherwise. Lost or un-named work can not be marked and you will receive 0%.
3. Stay Positive: You are not allowed to make fun of someone’s work or your own. Positive comments only.
4. Entering the classroom- Collect your portfolio from the front of the room and go directly to your assigned seat and make sure your sketch book, your pencil, eraser, sharpener and pencil case are out on the desk, and start drawing your SSD (see SSD below).
5. Good listener position- When your teacher is talking, for example at the beginning of each class, everyone is to be in the “good listener position”. (Feet flat on the floor, sitting upright and still, knees under the desk, nothing in the hands, your eyes open, quietly waiting and listening for the important words from your teacher!)
6. Raise your hand-When asking a question or making a comment, raise your hand and wait to be acknowledged.
7. FREEZE: When an announcement is about to be made, everyone must freeze. Stop what you are doing, and LISTEN, don’t move or make any noise.
8. When to be out of your seat: to borrow art materials from the front wooden desk, to borrow books from the book display, to get more paper for SSD, to ask the teacher a question, to clean up, to put recycle paper in the recycle bag or to throw out garbage.
You are not to be out of your seat- when the teacher is addressing the class unless it is a serious medical emergency.
You are not to wander around the room talking to others or looking at their work. There will be other opportunities to give classmates feedback on their work.
9. End of period dismissal: clean up, pass in your portfolio to the teacher then push your chair into the desk and wait behind your desk for dismissal. Mr. Lowe will dismiss the class once everything is ready. The bell does not dismiss you, your teachers do.
10. What Did I Miss? When you return to school, ask Mr. Lowe to show you a copy of the lesson plan. This should be done during SSD, not as you enter the class.
11. Ongoing Assignments: There will be two ongoing assignments that will start at the beginning of the rotation and will not need to be completed until near the end of the rotation. They are SSD and the Portfolio Design. Class time will be given throughout the rotation to work on these. Whenever you have free time in class you can work on these assignments.
12. SSD: Sustained Silent Drawing will be done during the first 5 minutes of each class. The purpose is to practice drawing. You will be given a list of things you have to complete by the end of the rotation. This will be a marked assignment.
13. When you finish early: (This doesn’t mean you are “done”.) Here are a few choices for you: SSD, decorate your portfolio, do an extra bonus assignment, help clean the room and/or desks or read an art book. No one should ever be doing nothing, you’re never “done” in here.
17. Recycle: Look for the recycle bag. This is where all discarded paper should go. Do not throw your garbage, paper towel or anything else besides paper in the recycle bag. Do not waste paper in here. Paper with pencil marks on it can still be used for a nice painting. Mr. Lowe may show you what can be done with damaged paper and or an eraser.
18. Cleaning the Desk: You may wash the desk with a clean damp cloth and soap whenever you feel the desk top is dirty. Please ask permission first.
19. Signing Artwork: always print your name (first and last) and PRA class on the back of your work.
20. WASHROOM - Use of the washroom during class time is to be kept to an absolute minimum. No one coming directly from lunch, nutrition break or the first class in the morning should ever need to go. The breaks from classes are there to give you a chance to use the washroom. Only one student may go at a time.
21. Lock Down: If the announcement says “This is a code Blue Bear” the lock down procedure is to get under the desks and sink areas away from the door. There is to be absolutely NO talking. The teacher will make sure the door is locked and the lights are out.
22. Entering and exiting the room: When you enter the classroom, enter through the door directly opposite from the tech room, from the direction of the main lobby door. Line up along the wall past the window and wait to be allowed to enter (the previous class may still be cleaning up). When you exit the class, use the exit at the back next to the chalk board and computers. This way there is no traffic jam between students entering and exiting the room.
